Matin Eadon, the national coach, has given all top riders access to this document. I plan to keep a score of the top riders on this page. I hope some of you are near the top of it.

Selection criteria for 1999 world cyclo-cross championships

The maximum team we can select is 8 riders, whom are nominated the weekend of our national championships, in each of the categories of Junior, Espoir and Elite, of which a maximum of 5 can ride on the day, Which is always the 5th weekend in the new year. In practice because of the cost, we take 5 riders in each category to the world championships and not the eight selected.

In 1999, the World Championships are in Slovakia, Steve Douce has been to assess the course and separately he will tell you about it.

In previous years, we have selected teams by your performance over the season and in particular in the National Championships and have by a Racing Committee Meeting at those Championships. However we have not actually published how the performances of the riders have been ranked and no one has really known they are going until they are going until they are asked. What is different this year is that today we are announcing to you and your Coaches, how you and anyone else can ride for Great Britain in 1999.

SYSTEM

There will be 7 races for Juniors/Espoirs and for the Elite the same 7 plus selected World Cup Races. Each of these races has a points value that is categorised as you can see on the sheet, and so that we pick the riders who are in form for the 5th weekend in the new year, the points will be weighted by a factor that gets higher the closer you are to the world championships. That weighting and the races are below:

RACES

OCTOBER 25TH NATIONAL TROPHY 1 IPSWICH

NOVEMBER 1ST NOTTINGHAM INTERNATIONAL

NOVEMBER 15TH NATIONAL TROPHY 2 BRISTOL

NOVEMBER 29TH BCCA INTERNATIONAL AND NATIONAL TROPHY 3 EASTWAY

DECEMBER 13TH NATIONAL TROPHY 4 LEICESTER

DECEMBER 27TH MACCLESFIELD SUPACROSS

JANUARY 10TH NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS SUTTON COLDFIELD

EXAMPLE

Second place in October's National Trophy will earn you 29 * 1.0 points = 29

Second place in December's National Trophy will earn you 29 * 1.4 points = 40.6

We will expect you to keep your points scored and to be aware of the points score of the riders above and below you, and the coaching committee will be keeping records too. Since the points total is probably the most important target for you, you must discuss with your Coaches the best way of preparing and peaking. We are afraid that it will be too late to start discussing why your score is low if you leave it till January. However, the committee has reserved the right to use a "Wild Card" to select one rider per team if circumstances warrant it.
