FROM THE COURSE
I apologise for the lack of updates to this page, the League table, and the results page for the Matlock C C event on 28th December.
This is entirely due to the effects of the milennium bug, I'm riddled with it.
Normal service will be resumed when the brandy and hot water have worked their magic on me
Another over-the-hundred turnout for the last race before Christmas on the ever-popular
Bramcore Hills course courtesy of Mick Brown and the Beeston R C.
Just a few regulars were away doing their Christmas shopping, but this was more than
compensated by visitors of a very high standard, the first half dozen places being taken
by riders who regularly represent the country.
As the bell sounded for the last lap, Midland Champion Carl Sturgeon, National Champion Steve Knight, and former National Champion Nick Craig were neck and neck, but in the last lap Sturgeon took 15 secons out of Craig and 23 seconds out of Knight.
National Veterans Champion Martin Booth was first Vet,
Andy Nelson was one place ahead of Tony Wilkins to claim first Senior Vet,
Diane Moss the first Woman,
and Rick Malik the first Grand Vet

why have they changed?
Most of the regular league riders in the main race will be issued with the
same back and arm numbers at each event.
They will hand in their BCCA riders card (not a licence) when they sign on and
get their card back when they return their numbers.
The signing-on sheets will be pre-printed with most of their details,
so they will only have to sign (and pay!).
This should speed up signing-on when we all get used to it.
The riders names now appear in the Season Guide,
which is like a programme only it covers every Notts and Derby race.
It is so we can publish the Guide that we made all the other changes.
We want to use the Guide to make our races more friendly to spectators.
We cannot afford a PA system and a commentator
at every race, but we can afford Season Guides:
if we sell them all it will more than cover the cost.
So buy one or two and show your friends what you get up to on a Saturday,
invite them along to spectate.
How to ...
The judges have asked me to remind all riders thet if the judges cannot read the riders number, then riders may find that the results show them having completed less laps than they actually did. The judges do try their hardest to read the numbers correctly, but some riders could do more to help.
Back numbers should be at the bottom of the back (vital), somewhat to the left side (best on a muddy race). Why ...?
have riders in the main race not been allowed to sign on before 12:30?
For two reasons
(a) Make life a little easier for the harassed registration steward
(b) Provide alternative activities for the Senior riders so they are not so tempted to ride
on the course whilst the Youth race is in progress.

The Notts and Derby League has launched into hyperspace for a few simple reasons:
To let riders and any interested people get access to more information, at higher speeds than ever before.
To give cyclo-cross in this area a higher public profile.
& because I had web space free, and wanted to use it.
It's eight years since the league result tables were first compiled on computer spreadsheet, as part of my school computer project. My involvement in cyclo-cross, and in computing have stayed with my since then and helped to make my what I am (some excuse!). I hope that cyclo-cross can be as enriching to some of you who read this as it has to me.

In the beginning ...
When the Notts & Derby League started I was a Junior in the Matlock Cycling Club. Back in 1980 there were only a handful of Cyclo-Cross races in the Notts & Derby Area. The Yorkshire and Leicestershire Leagues were much stronger then; Tony Lynch had the idea of starting a league in our area and wrote to all the cycling clubs he could think of to arrange a meeting of interested parties. I cycled to the meeting at Heanor Town Hall with Mark Hughes, and Tony told us his ideas for local races on Saturdays, and so the League was born!
