RECORD START TO NEW CYCLO-CROSS SEASON

DERBY'S SOUTH PENNINE R C promotion of the 1st round of the popular Notts & Derby Cyclo-Cross League attracted a record entry of 174 competitors. A fabulous start to the new season!

Here's the detail:-

UNDER 12 YEAR OLDS

As with all Cyclo-Cross races, organisers have to put on a free entry event for this age group and they are always popular with the spectators who take great interest not only in the race itself but also in the antics of some parents as they encourage their own children!

This race last Saturday at Derby's Allestree Park saw visitors Ben Swift (10 years old - Mossley St Josephs School) and Ricky Hulton (11 years - Tunstall Wheelers) take 1st and 2nd, but 10 year old Jamie Harris of Long Eaton's Double A Cycles was only inches away from 2nd! Ben however led the race all the way and won by 13 seconds.

YOUTH RACE

The "Youth" Category embraces the ages from 12 to 15 years and they race for about 7 miles (25 to 30 minutes).

Last season the clear Champion was Matlock CC's Phil Spencer, and if South Pennine's race is anything to go by. then it looks as though 15 year old Phil will win the League overall again! He gave no one else a chance to beat him, leading form the off to win by 1 minute 53 seconds from team mate Steve Minshull, who, once two miles had been covered, had overtaken Lee Alton of Team Valley and at the finish was 18 seconds ahead of Lee. Dean Smith, in the first half mile, appeared to be a challenge to Phil Spencer, but his tyre rolled off and he was last in the race after he got it sorted and then he climbed through the field to finish a deserving 4th.

SENIOR EVENT

131 riders massed to start this race with the brilliant sunshine reflecting from their shiny bikes and bright clothing and the judges standing with worried frowns on their faces in case a single rider should be placed wrongly. Race referee, Arthur Gamble, renowned for strict but fair rulings got a textbook start from the huge field and Derby's Ace RT swept three of their riders straight to the front as the race entered the first narrow section into the woods. A wise move as congestion then followed as the bulk of the riders came to the same section.

Organiser Russell Cox had devised a figure of eight route through the woods, making the event very spectator friendly, and as the riders emerged for the first time, Martin Seddon had the lead on last year's joint League winner - Paul Wright, both of them riding for Ace RT. Shrewsbury visitor, Chris Horsfield was 3rd leading a pack containing Gavin Hardwicke, Alex Forrester, Julian Gould & Scott Gamble.

Gradually, Seddon pulled away from the rest, but after 7 miles, suddenly Wright was on his own at the front, Horsfield & Seddon were 10 seconds behind and there was another few seconds and the four above each still had ideas that a win was possible. We learnt that MartinSeddon had fallen off on a wet patch, especially as once he had his breath back, he left Horsfield behind and caught his team mate!

The spectators began to speculate as to who was most likely to win as Seddon & Wright worked toghether to put paid to a challenger winning whilst further back, Gavin Hardwicke had left the quartet but couldn't catch Horsfield.

Wright won for Ace RT, Seddon's effort in catching Wright lost him 15 seconds as Wright pulled away on the last lap and with Julian Gould in 7th place they clinched the Team Award for Ace RT.
